Integrating an AI chat bot feature, powered by Chat GPT into the Orchyd app.

I worked with Orchyd to integrate an AI chatbot, powered by ChatGPT, into their period-tracking app. This feature, called "Blossom," was designed to help users learn more about their cycles and receive personalized answers based on the data they’ve already entered.

As AI technology continued to boom, Orchyd was eager to stay ahead of the curve by introducing Blossom. They had already experimented with integrating AI into the app but brought me on to ensure the feature was not only functional but also exciting, seamless, and user-friendly.

As I explored the initial flow of Blossom, a few issues stood out:

  • it felt like Blossom and Orchyd MD were competing for attention. Both are valuable features, but they didn’t share the space in a way that felt harmonious.
  • The very first interaction with Blossom hit users with a bulk of messages, including a Terms and Conditions agreement, which they could accept by sending any message in the chat. Given Orchyd’s emphasis on transparency and trust,so I knew it would be important to present this information in a way that reflected that.​
  • The core functionality of Blossom was solid, but it needed a few UI adjustments and tweaks to improve chat suggestions and overall flow.

The Design Approach

Working Together

I wanted to create a clear visual distinction between Orchyd MD and Blossom while ensuring both features could share the same "home" within the app. Previously, tapping the center tab opened the Blossom chat directly. My approach was to modify the existing Orchyd MD home tab to include both features, each with its own identity but still accessible from the same place.

Meeting Blossom

To address the bulk messaging issue, I designed a solution that felt more aligned with Orchyd’s mission. I introduced a new info card (similar to Orchyd MD’s) where users could learn more about Blossom at their own pace. For the Terms and Conditions, instead of burying them within the chat, they now appear as a pop-up when the user opens Blossom for the first time—ensuring that the introduction to this exciting new feature isn’t bogged down by legal jargon.

Chatting with Blossom

The chat experience itself was redesigned to feel more inviting. Instead of starting with a long stream of messages, users now receive three short, friendly messages. Below the chat, I added intuitive suggestions to explore AI capabilities, quick access to Orchyd MD if a medical professional might be needed, and an easy way to end the chat—all without overwhelming the user.

Launching the Update

This project was my first time working with AI, and it was an exciting opportunity to learn and experiment with new technology. When the update launched, Orchyd received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and the app’s rating rose to 4.7 stars in the app store.
